What's the Reason for Yarn Being Sold in Skeins?

Whether you're making a gorgeous tapestry, a cute amigurumi, or a cozy sweater, yarn has a special place in the hearts of crafters. Isn't it the cornerstone of our artistic pursuits? But why yarn commonly comes in skeins instead of just ready-to-use balls has always baffled me. Together, let's explore this fascinating part of the skein of yarn.

What is the Skein of Yarn?

Skeins aren't just your average balls of yarn – they're long, oval-shaped bundles, perfect for knitting, crocheting, and other fiber crafts. You'll often find them stacked on the shelves of big craft stores. Skein of yarn usually comes with a label or banderole that gives you important info like what the yarn is made of and how to use it.

Interestingly, people often use the word "skein" to talk about a unit of yarn. So, you might hear questions like "What can I make with one skein of yarn?" or "How many skeins do I need for a blanket?" This might seem strange since "skein" originally referred to a winding technique rather than a specific weight. Additionally, yarn can be made into yarn hanks by winding it into a long loop, twisting it into a cord, and tying it off with a knot.

Why Skeins Are Everywhere: The reasons behind their popularity and widespread availability.

Practicality and Space Efficiency

When it comes to storing yarn collection, skeins are incredibly practical. Their oblong shape is designed to make handling and storage a cinch. Thanks to this shape, you can stack skeins neatly without worrying about them getting tangled or knotted. Whether you're organizing your yarn stash at home or browsing the aisles of a craft store, skeins make the most of the available space.

Ease of Use

Yarn skeins are shaped to be easy to handle and work with. Their oblong form provides a comfortable grip, allowing you to unwind the yarn effortlessly as you craft. They can be unwound from either the outside or inside, depending on your preference, making them versatile and user-friendly. And thanks to careful winding, skeins are less likely to tangle or knot, saving you time and frustration during your crafting adventures.

Color

Color is important when choosing the yarn. This is particularly true for yarns that have been speckled, variegated, kettle-dyed, or hand dyed yarn. You may better appreciate the range of colors and complex patterns in the skein, which makes this process of investigation and choosing easier and enables crafters to visually evaluate the yarn's qualities and picture it being used in their works.

How to Prepare a Skein of Yarn for Knitting

While skeins offer many benefits, they do require winding into a ball before use to avoid tangling. You can wind it by hand or invest in tools like a yarn swift and ball winder for a quicker process.

You might wonder, how much yarn is in a skein?

Well, it's all about the weight. Each skein you buy will have a label telling you exactly how much yarn is inside. Manufacturers usually offer a few standard yarn sizes: 1 ounce, 50 grams, and 200 grams, but the most common is 100 grams.

Now, the weight of the yarn —basically, the thickness of each strand—can change the quantity used. For instance, even though they weigh the same, a skein of DK weight yarn will be shorter than one of fingering yarn.

Therefore, constantly reading the label is the best approach to finding the answer to this question.

When it comes to weight yarn, fingering weight yarn often yields 360–480 yards per 100 grams, but DK weight yarn may yield 240–300 yards. But keep in mind that you should always verify the precise yardage by reading the label or the internet description twice.
